Black Friday Survival Tips

After indulging in turkey and all the fixings on Thanksgiving, I’ve never really been inclined to wake up at 4 a.m. the next day and haul my over-stuffed self to a big box store. But many Spendsters make Black Friday an annual tradition, switching into defensive mode as they elbow with other shoppers in an attempt to find the best deals.

51 percent of Americans will do at least some of their shopping on Black Friday this year, according to our poll. And although many of them will find deals on electronics, toys, or clothes, they also will be tempted to buy gifts they didn’t plan for—but just couldn’t resist.

With about a week until the big shopping day, Spendster wants you to be prepared for the retail assault that awaits you on Black Friday.

1. Do Your Research

You might not clip coupons and search newspaper circulars for deals on an everyday basis, but take the time to do it before heading out on Black Friday.

  • If a big-ticket electronics item is on your list, Black Friday likely is your best day to buy.
  • For items priced around $100 or less, the best specials might be the week before Christmas.

Compare what the store is offering to what you could find online instead. Could you take advantage of Cyber Money or Free Shipping Day and get your gift cheaper?

2. Put on Your Blinders

From door busters to one-day-only deals, you’ll have temptations flying at you from every aisle. Go in with a list of gifts you need, then get out!

3. Take Cash

If you don’t trust yourself, leave your credit cards at home and take cash. On the day before Thanksgiving, withdrawal from the bank enough money for everything on your list. Then, do NOT go back to the ATM machine! You’ll probably have to pay an extra ATM fee and you’ll definitely be going over your limit.

4. Consider extras

  • Gas. Can you carpool with other friends or family members or take public transportation?
  • Snacks and coffee. Can you pack a thermos or baggies of snacks to keep your energy up?
  • Parking. Will there be free parking available at the stores you’re flocking to?

5. Return or No Return

Make sure there aren’t any special stipulations for deals on Black Friday. If you find a better deal or a different gift for someone on your list before the holidays, you’ll want to be able to return what you bought on Black Friday.
